In the early 1960s, Lee Iacocca had a vision for an affordable sports car market for younger buyers. He convinced his superiors at Ford and in record time on a shoe-string budget, Ford developed the Mustang. Ford introduced the 1965 Mustang at the World's Fair on April 17, 1964, and things escalated quickly from there. Ford planned for 100,000 first-year sales, but dealers sold 22,000 on the first day. Welcome to the pony car and a whole new era. The Mustang launched with convertible and notchback body styles, with the fastback joining the lineup as a late 1965. From there the Mustang continued to evolve over the years. We have seen six Ford Mustang generations since that first model and one thing that remains constant is the continued innovation and evolution of this famous model.
