2021 Ford Mach E

2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E Overview

Throughout its 50-plus year tenure, the Ford Mustang has gained quite the reputation as the working man’s performance car. This, of course, is for good reason. Within a year of the line’s initial debut, legendary automotive designer Carrol Shelby was already well on his way toward complete mastery of shoehorning all-powerful, high displacement engines beneath the Mustang’s hood.

For all intents and purposes, the Mustang’s legacy is one built upon ringing every possible ounce of horsepower out of an eight-cylinder internal combustion engine. However, Ford is now breaking from tradition, with the release of their new Mustang Mach-E. This crossover SUV forgoes the use of a conventional internal combustion engine, instead opting for an all-electric powertrain system.

Background & Details

Over the past several years, Ford has emerged as an adamant supporter of zero-emissions vehicles. Earlier this year, the manufacturing giant even promised to eliminate all production and sales of non-electric vehicles in Europe by 2030. This was a goal that many felt to be overly ambitious, until the recent release of the company’s all new Mustang Mach-E.

The Mustang Mach-E, officially released in December 2020, is an all-electric crossover SUV, and which boasts strikingly impressive performance statistics. The Mach-E is available in six individual models and can be purchased with a consumer’s choice of two optional battery packs (Standard/Extended Range). Ford’s new zero-emissions performance car can also be optioned in both rear and all-wheel-drive formats.

When developing the Mach-E, Ford leaned heavily upon lessons learned during earlier production of the company’s fourth-generation Focus and Escape, both of which were designed upon the C2 electrical platform. This system was then significantly revised, before achieving GE1 (Global Electrified 1) status.

As a result of these revisions, the Mach-E has found itself on a playing field all its own, in terms of overall performance. In its most potent form, the GT Performance model, the Mach-E boasts a total output of 480 horsepower and 634 lb./ft. of torque, while achieving sub-4 second 0-60 MPH times.

2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E Select

The Mach E, in its base form, is regarded by Ford as the line’s “Select” model. In this format, the Mach E features 18-inch aluminum wheels, as well as LED head/tail lights. The Select model’s interior is accented by black leatherette seats, complete with detailed stitch-work. The car’s driver-side seat is of the powered variety, while its passenger-side seat is manually adjustable. Also of note, is the Mach E’s use of fold-flat second-row seating, which is configured into a 60/40 split.

Propelling the Select model are standard range rear-drive motors. However, dual-motor AWD is available upon request.

2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E Premium

Building upon the Select package is the Mustang Mach-E Premium. In this format, the Mach-E features 19-inch machined aluminum wheels, panoramic roof glass, premium LED lighting, and heated front-row seating. The Mach-E Premium’s seats come covered in a customer’s choice of black or gray perforated leatherette. Other interior amenities include multi-color ambient lighting and an upgraded audio package, as well as the addition of a 360-degree view camera/active park system.

The 2021 Mustang Mach-E is available in both rear or all-wheel drive. Additionally, consumers can choose between a standard or extended range battery, the latter of which comes at an additional cost.

2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E First Edition

In celebration of the upcoming release, Ford announced that they would be producing a limited number of First Edition Mach-E Mustangs. Each First Edition Mach-E was produced under the extended range AWD format and featured commemorative badging. Other signature touches included the addition of red-painted brake calipers, metallic pedal covers, and contrast seat stitching.

However, those wishing to purchase a First Edition Mach-E had to move quickly. Within days of Ford’s announcement regarding the availability of the Mach-E in its First Edition format, all had been spoken for.

Ford has also unveiled the Mustang Mach-E California Route 1 model, which combines much of the tech found in Premium model offerings, with the finer points of the Select model’s interior. The Mach-E California Route 1 features aerodynamic 18-inch wheels, as well as model-specific badging. While this model retains a host of the Premium model’s technical functions, consumers will be greeted by the same detail-stitched leatherette seat trim, as is prevalent in the Mach-E Select.

The Mach- E California Route-1 is only available in a rear-wheel-drive format. Consumers are also provided with a single battery option (Extended-Range).

2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E GT

Keeping with tradition, Ford has saved their “GT” designation for only the most worthy of Mach-E models. The Mach-E GT features specialty 20-inch aluminum wheels, as well as custom front and rear bumpers, which are far more aggressive in form. The model’s wheel arches are also painted to provide the car with a more refined appearance.

Inside, the Mach-E GT showcases bolstered front bucket seats, trimmed in faux suede with metallic stitching. This copper stitching is also found along the GT’s door cards and dash. Rounding out the high-end Mach-E’s interior looks is an embossed GT logo, found upon the car’s front center armrest.

Those in search of heightened performance will also find favor in the Mustang Mach-E GT. In this format, the Mach-E shells out 480 horsepower, and 600 lb./ft. of torque. As such, the GT is capable of posting 0-60 MPH times of only 3.8 seconds.

Ford has also engineered a Mach-E model specifically aimed at silencing all skeptics, many of which have insisted that an all-electric vehicle would never appeal to the performance market. Here to erase all doubt, is the Mustang Mach-E GT Performance Edition, complete with a high enough degree of output, to stand tall against even the most formidable of today’s non-electric vehicles.

The Mustang Mach-E GT Performance Edition produces a total of 480 horsepower and 634 lb./ft. of torque, while posting 0-60 MPH times of only 3.5 seconds. This enhanced performance is achieved by drawing additional power from the vehicle’s battery. Even with this as the case, the Mach-E Performance Edition carries an EPA-estimated range of 235 miles.

Those at Ford equipped Mach-E GT Performance Edition with a host of additional upgraded components, including a pair of 385-millimeter front rotors, and high-performance Brembo calipers. Also standard is a set of 245/45R20 Pirelli summer tires, mounted to 20-inch machined-face aluminum wheels. Additionally, the Mach-E GT Performance features a custom MagneRide Damping System, specifically engineered to enhance the car’s handling capabilities.
