2021 Ford Mustang Mach 1 Overview

Going into the 2021 model year, the Mustang community knew that the winds of change were just over the horizon. Ford had already unveiled plans to retire the Mustang GT350, once 2020 production drew to a close. However, this news did not come without a silver lining.

Taking the GT350’s place within the 2021 Mustang lineup would be a sixth-generation Mach 1. Ultimately, the 2021 Mach 1, has proved itself every bit as worthy of carrying this storied designation, as any of the high-output pony cars of the 1960s and 70s. In its latest form, the Mach 1 features a 5.0-liter Coyote V8, paired to a six-speed manual transmission. Alternatively, consumers can opt for the purchase of a ten-speed SelectShift automatic transmission.

The 2021 Mach 1 is also the benefactor of a specialty handling package, which comes complete with 305/30R19 (front) and 315/30R19 (rear) tires, as well as MagneRide dampers. This high-output Mustang also features a Selectable Power-Assisted Steering System (EPAS).

Background & Details

The Ford Mustang has now been in production for more than five decades, all the while, serving as a true performance car for the masses. Throughout this period of time, Ford has frequently revitalized the Mustang lineup, by offering numerous specialty packages and race-inspired model derivatives. Naturally, many of these iconic pony cars have amassed quite the following.

However, few Mustangs have garnered the same degree of fanfare as the legendary Mach 1. The Mach 1 initially debuted during the 1969 model year and remained in production until 1978. The years that followed would see the Mach 1 nameplate fade into obscurity, only to be briefly resurrected during fourth-generation production.

Then, in the spring of 2020, Ford made a series of announcements detailing plans to once again revive the Mach 1 moniker, this time after a hiatus of more than a decade. The Mach 1’s release coincided with the retirement of another iconic Mustang sub-model, the GT350. The Mach 1 was meant to fill many of the gaps, serving as an all-around performer that was just as nimble on the streets as it was on the track.

Equipped with a 5.0 Coyote powerplant and a 6-speed manual transmission, the 2021 Mach 1 churns out 480 horsepower. However, the 2021 Mach 1 is far more than just a superb straight-line performer. The Mach 1 is quite adept at powering through even the tightest of curves, thanks to the addition of numerous upgraded steering and suspension upgrades.

2021 Ford Mustang Mach 1 Models & Packages

2021 Mustang Mach 1 Coupe/Fastback

Ford has brought the famed Mustang Mach 1 out of retirement for the 2021 model year. The 2021 Mach 1 is being offered in limited quantities and is largely heralded as the manufacturing giant’s direct response to concerns expressed over the discontinuation of the legendary GT350. In many ways, the Mach 1 bridges the gap left behind by the GT350’s absence quite well. This high-performance pony car blends unwavering straight line performance with next-level handling capabilities, to provide consumers with a driving experience like none other.

Like the 2021 GT Fastback, the Mach 1 features a high-output version of Ford’s highly-revered 5.0 Coyote V8. This engine is paired to either a Tremec six-speed manual or ten-speed SelectShift automatic transmission, depending upon a consumer’s preferences. Power is transferred to the pavement through a 3.73 Torsen Limited-Slip rear axle assembly. All things considered, the Mach 1 dishes out 480 horsepower, and 420 lb.-ft. of torque.

Many have also praised the 2021 Mustang Mach 1’s superior handling capabilities, much of which can be attributed to the car’s use of MagneRide adaptive shock absorbers, upgraded front springs, and adjustable strut top mounts. The Mach 1’s chassis has even been specifically tuned to optimize cornering stability.

The Mach 1’s appearance is also quite unique, paying apparent tribute to the earlier specialty Mustangs for which it is named. Some of the most noteworthy of these cosmetic upgrades include a custom front fascia, as well a signature striping along the Mach 1’s sides and hood.
