The highlight of the 2007 model year for the Ford Mustang was easily the Shelby GT500, the most powerful production Mustang ever and an absolute home run in terms of performance. This car actually went on sale in early 2006, but technically was an 2007 model. There was also a new Shelby GT, basically a Hertz-rental-only 2006 Ford Shelby GT-H you could buy in store.
The all-new SVT Mustang Cobra came to market as the 2007 Ford Shelby GT500, a collaboration between Shelby and SVT. Based on the all-new S197 Mustang platform and equipped with a special 500-horsepower supercharged version of the 5.4-liter V-8. This car was more than skin deep too, not just a horsepower monster because SVT upgraded every part of the car to turn it into the best Mustang we had seen in decade in terms of the total package.
At the lower end of the 2007 Mustang model range there was a lot of carryover going on but there were some upgrades worth mentioning and new options to keep things fresh. New options packages were available for 2007 and the GT got most of the added attention. The GT models were available with two new high level packages, the GT California Special edition and the GT appearance package. Buyers who wanted to dress-up their Mustang GT could opt for the GT appearance package. This package included a non-functional hood scoop, rolled chrome exhaust tips and a decorative plastic engine cover with a running horse emblem.
The most distinctive change for the 2007 Mustang comes in the form of the California Special edition. The Mustang GT California Special recalled a popular 1960s treatment and was available on GT Premium models. It added $1895 to the $26,805 coupe or $31,630 convertible. The GT/CS included 18-inch wheels, body side scoops, unique tape stripes, rolled bright exhaust tips, a chin spoiler 1.5 inches lower than the GT’s, and unique front and rear fascias. Inside, black leather seats were trimmed with “Cal Special” contrasting Dove or Parchment leather inserts. The GT appearance package cost $245 and featured rolled exhaust tips, an engine cover with a Pony emblem, and a decorative hood scoop. It could be combined with the GT/SC equipment. For all models, Grabber Orange was a new color, an auxiliary audio input jack was standard, satellite radio was a new option, and a new comfort package featured heated front seats. A navigation system was a first-time feature planned for late in the model year. This package is purchased as an add-on to the deluxe GT package.
Across the range, all 2007 Mustangs received an auxiliary audio input jack as standard equipment. New optional equipment included front heated leather seats and Sirius satellite radio. Rounding out the changes for 2007 was the addition of Grabber Orange to the Mustangs colour palette.

Powertrain & Chassis
Muscular engines infuse Mustang with tire-smoking performance. The 4.6-liter, aluminum V-8 has three valve heads and cranks out 300 horsepower. That’s more than 50 percent more power than the small-block, 289-cubic-inch V-8 found in the classic 1964 model.
The standard engine, a 60-degree, 4.0-liter, single-overhead-cam V-6, produces 210 horsepower and 240 foot-pounds of torque.
Both engines are paired with a standard five-speed manual or an available five-speed automatic, which provides a unique combination of off-the-line jump and good highway fuel economy.
At the front suspension, MacPherson struts with reverse “L” lower control arms deliver comfort. The three-link rear suspension has a lightweight, tubular Panhard rod that provides precise control of the rear axle. This technology stabilizes the rear axle as the wheels move, particularly during hard cornering.
The standard four-wheel disc brakes have the biggest rotors and stiffest calipers ever fitted to a mainstream Mustang. Twin-piston aluminum calipers clamp down on 12.4-inch ventilated front brake discs on GT models. In the rear, the brake rotors are 11.8 inches in diameter.
A four-channel anti-lock brake system (ABS) with traction control is standard on GT models and available on V-6 models. It uses electronic sensors to constantly monitor road conditions and feed the information to a dedicated control computer that’s capable of determining within milliseconds whether the vehicle is on dry pavement or negotiating a slippery surface. When traction control isn’t desired, drivers can deactivate the system with a button on the instrument panel.
Safety and Security
With power comes responsibility. The 2007 Mustang helps occupants stay safe.
Ford’s Personal Safety System®, a comprehensive safety technology package, is standard. The system provides increased protection in frontal crashes by analyzing crash factors and determining the proper response within milliseconds. It uses dual-stage driver and front-passenger air bags — capable of deploying at full or partial power — safety belt pretensioners and energy management retractors.
Standard right front passenger sensing builds on the strength of the Personal Safety System ® to tailor deployment of the front-passenger air bag. If the passenger seat sensor detects no or very little weight, as for a briefcase, the passenger air bag is automatically switched off. If more weight is on the seat, as for a small child, the air bag remains deactivated and an instrument panel light alerts the driver. If a heavier adult is in the passenger seat, the air bag automatically switches on.
An optional active anti-theft package offers customers an added level of security. It includes a sensing module to guard against tow-away thefts, an interior motion sensor to detect smash-and-grab break-ins, a separate alarm sounder — in addition to the vehicle horn — to thwart thieves trying to disable the horn, and a high-capacity, 60-ampere-hour battery that sounds the alarm longer.

The quarter-mile required only 12.9 seconds at 112 mph, 150 mph came in 30.3 seconds, and an electronic tether limited top speed to 155 mph. This was one serious performance Mustang and easily the best accelerating Ford we had seen in a while. Below we have included 0-60 mph times, 0-100 mph times as well as quarter mile times and top speed where available for the 2007 Mustang model range.
