When Ford replaced the 5.0L pushrod small-block with the overhead-cam Modular V-8 for 1996, it paved the way for a new and more powerful engine for the Special Vehicle Team’s Cobra model. While the GT featured a 2-valve engine, the 1996-98 Cobras received a brand-new 4.6L V-8 with four valves per cylinder and dual overhead cams, resulting in a high-revving 305 HP, 65 more than the previous Cobra’s 5.0L V-8, which enabled the 1998 Cobra to achieve a 0-60 time of 5.50 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 14.0 seconds.
SVT incorporated advanced engine technology into the 1998 Cobra, including secondary throttles that opened at high RPM to deliver a seamless rush of power at wide-open throttle. As the highlight of the 1998 Mustang lineup, the Cobra came equipped with a T-45 5-speed manual transmission, MacPherson strut front suspension with stabilizer bars and variable-rate coil springs, power 4-wheel disc brakes, a Traction-Lok rear axle, and the original Cobra wheels.
To distinguish the Cobra from the GTs, SVT added twin hood nostrils, round fog lamps in the front fascia, a rear spoiler, and embossed “Cobra” lettering on the rear bumper cover. Additional amenities for road comfort included a leather interior, power rack-and-pinion steering, air conditioning, cruise control, an AM/FM/CD/cassette stereo, and power-assisted windows and door locks.
