The 2004 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra remains one of the defining performance variants of the SN95 generation, and this exceptionally low-mileage example, now offered on Bring a Trailer, showcases the model’s engineering and visual character particularly well. With just 1,200 miles, it is one of only 495 Cobra convertibles produced for 2004 with the highly distinctive Mystichrome Appearance Package.
Ford’s Special Vehicle Team transformed the Mustang Cobra for 2003 with the introduction of its supercharged 4.6-liter DOHC V8, an engine that quickly earned the nickname “Terminator.” The powertrain returned for 2004 with a robust cast-iron block, forged-steel crankshaft, forged Manley H-beam connecting rods, aluminum cylinder heads, and an oil cooler. An Eaton Roots-type supercharger, driven by its own dedicated belt, supplied the boost.
Factory output was rated at 390 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque, making the Cobra one of the most formidable Mustangs of its era. A specially tuned 2.25-inch stainless-steel exhaust system provided the appropriate soundtrack, while every engine was hand-assembled and identified by an SVT plaque bearing the names of its two-person assembly team. Power reached the rear wheels through a Tremec T-56 six-speed manual transmission, paired with a lightweight aluminum flywheel and driveshaft, high-strength universal joints, and a limited-slip differential.
This convertible is finished in Mystichrome Clearcoat, a factory color distinguished by ChromaFlair pigments capable of shifting through topaz green, cobalt blue, royal purple, and deep onyx black depending on lighting and viewing angle. The finish is complemented by a black power-retractable soft top, rear spoiler, fog lamps, black-surround headlights, polished dual exhaust outlets, and SVT and Cobra badging. The Cobra also received unique exterior treatment that separated it from the standard SN95 Mustang, including a revised hood, rocker panels, and front and rear fascias.
The car rides on 17-inch chrome five-spoke wheels fitted with Nitto NT05 tires. Its SVT-specific suspension incorporates linear-rate springs and gas-pressurized Bilstein monotube dampers, while the independent rear suspension represented a significant departure from the conventional Mustang setup. Four-wheel disc brakes, including Cobra-branded front calipers, provide stopping power.
Inside, articulated sport seats are upholstered in Dark Charcoal Nudo leather with Mystichrome inserts and embroidered Cobra emblems. Equipment includes a Mach 460 AM/FM/cassette system with a six-disc CD changer, power-adjustable driver’s seat, cruise control, air conditioning, remote keyless entry, and power windows, mirrors, and locks. A leather-wrapped steering wheel with Mystichrome accents frames white-faced instruments, including a 160-mph speedometer, SVT tachometer with a 6,500-rpm redline, boost-pressure gauge, oil-pressure gauge, coolant-temperature gauge, and fuel gauge.
With its hand-built supercharged V8, six-speed manual transmission, independent rear suspension, rare Mystichrome specification, and remarkably low mileage, this 2004 SVT Cobra represents a particularly compelling example of Ford’s early-2000s performance philosophy.
