Looking back to 1967, the stage was set for the iconic Cobra Jet Mustang. It began with the redesign of the Mustang’s engine bay, allowing for larger powerplants. Soon after, the GT500 debuted with its powerful 428 cubic-inch Police Interceptor V8.

Plans were set in motion to enhance performance further. Initially, the GT500 offered the Police Interceptor V8 and an optional 427 cubic-inch V8. However, in April 1968, the 428 cubic-inch Cobra Jet equipped Shelby Cobra GT500 KR was unveiled.

The GT500 KR became Ford’s flagship performance vehicle, earning its “King of the Road” (KR) designation. Visually striking, it boasted an extended front fascia with a large grille and driving lights, along with a distinctive fiberglass hood featuring twin air scoops and louvered vents. Inside, the GT500 KR boasted deluxe trim, a wood-rimmed steering wheel, and Cobra embossed center console lid.

Officially, the 428 cubic-inch Cobra Jet V8 was rated at 335 horsepower. However, this value is known to be grossly underestimated, with most being in universal agreement that the engine’s true output was well in excess of 400 horsepower, and 440 lb-ft of torque.
