Although the 1965 GT350s sold well, early buyers criticized them for being harsh and noisy due to their race car design. In response, the 1966 GT350 received mechanical tweaks to enhance user-friendliness. Exterior changes included Plexiglas quarter windows, scoops, and rear brake cooling ducts.
Mechanically, the 1966 model retained the Shelby-prepared 306 brake horsepower, solid lifter 289-cubic inch Ford V-8 engine with a Holley four-barrel carburetor, but featured a quieter exhaust system. The standard Borg-Warner T10 four-speed manual transmission could be replaced with an optional automatic. The suspension was modified to be closer to stock, improving ride comfort.
Today, the 1966 Shelby GT350 is highly sought after by collectors, often commanding sales prices in excess of $100,000, just like the example offered here courtesy of Bring A Trailer. It was originally delivered to Marv Tonkin Ford in Portland, Oregon, on February 25, 1966.
This car, finished in Candy Apple Red with cast alloy wheels and a Sport Deck rear seat, had four owners in Oregon before being bought by its current owner in Washington in 2005. It was refurbished in 2006, repainted in its original color with white stripes, and powered by a 289ci HiPo V8 paired with a T-10 four-speed manual transmission.
Other features include black vinyl upholstery, front disc brakes, Koni shocks, dual exhaust, Flowmaster mufflers, a Holley 715-cfm carburetor, PerTronix ignition, a steel-reinforced fiberglass hood, a wood-rimmed steering wheel, and an AM radio.
