DRAG RACE: Mustang vs Camaro vs Challenger

Some argue that muscle cars excel primarily in straight-line races, and this holds particularly true for the Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro, and Dodge Challenger. Amazingly, the folks at carwow  managed to get their hands on modified versions of these three iconic vehicles for a classic quarter-mile drag race.

Although the numbers are relatively close among these three contenders, let’s review the specifications to understand how these modified machines stack up on paper.

Matt Watson (the host) takes the wheel of a supercharged Ford Mustang GT, known as the King Cobra. Beneath the hood lies a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine, generating 735 horsepower and 508 ft-lbs of torque. Power is delivered exclusively to the rear wheels, mirroring the configuration of the others. The Mustang, however, carries some weight, tipping the scales at 3,913 pounds (1,775 kg).

The Chevrolet Camaro is fitted with a 6.2-liter V8 engine, providing a displacement advantage over the Mustang. A centrifugal supercharger boosts its output to 650 horsepower and approximately 508 ft-lbs of torque. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels through the stock 8-speed automatic transmission. It’s the lightest of the trio, weighing in at 3,651 lbs (1,656 kg).

The Challenger SRT Scat Pack in this lineup produces 650 bhp and 443 lb-ft of torque. Also featuring rear-wheel-drive, it is the heaviest of the three, with a weight of 1,900 kg (4,189 lbs).
