The Ford Mustang GTD is a road-legal engineering masterpiece that abandons the traditional muscle car formula in favor of technology and performance typically reserved for elite supercars. Co-developed with Multimatic alongside Ford’s Mustang GT3 race car program, this ultra-exclusive machine stands as the most advanced circuit-focused vehicle ever produced by Ford Motor Company.
Its engineering credibility was solidified at Germany’s legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife, where it recorded an official lap time of 6:40.835, becoming the first American production car to break the seven-minute threshold around the demanding circuit.

Shared Mechanical Platform & Powertrain Engineering

Every version of the Mustang GTD is underpinned by a race-bred chassis architecture designed to deliver near-perfect 50/50 weight distribution between the front and rear axles.

At the center of the car is a heavily revised 5.2-liter supercharged “Predator” V8 equipped with a dry-sump lubrication system. The engine revs to 7,400 rpm and generates an immense 815 horsepower along with 664 lb-ft of torque. Instead of a conventional transmission layout, the GTD channels power through a carbon-fiber driveshaft to a rear-mounted TREMEC 8-speed dual-clutch transaxle for improved balance and handling precision.

The chassis utilizes a sophisticated short-long-arm front suspension system combined with Multimatic DSSV semi-active rear suspension technology. Its pushrod suspension assembly is mounted within the rear cargo area, while an adaptive dual-height configuration lowers the car by 40 mm in Track Mode to enhance aerodynamic efficiency and stability.

Massive Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes sit behind 20-inch wheels wrapped in aggressive Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, giving the GTD immense stopping power and track-ready grip.

Mustang GTD Variants

1. Standard Mustang GTD

The standard Mustang GTD serves as the foundation of the lineup, but even in its “base” configuration, it operates at a level far beyond a traditional muscle car. Ford engineered this version with a race-first philosophy, integrating advanced carbon-fiber construction, aggressive aerodynamic tuning, and a chassis co-developed with Multimatic.

Power comes from the supercharged 5.2-liter Predator V8 producing 815 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque, paired with a rear-mounted 8-speed dual-clutch transaxle for optimal balance and performance. Even the entry GTD includes active suspension technology, carbon-ceramic brakes, a fixed rear wing, and extensive lightweight body panels.

Ford initially announced a starting price of around $325,000 before options and customization. Depending on specification, most standard GTD builds are expected to land between $350,000 and $400,000.

2. Mustang GTD Carbon Series

The Carbon Series elevates the GTD’s exotic appeal by showcasing exposed carbon-fiber bodywork across key exterior surfaces. The hood, roof, and rear decklid feature visible carbon weave precisely aligned through a painstaking manufacturing process that emphasizes craftsmanship as much as performance.

Although mechanically identical to the standard GTD, the Carbon Series targets buyers seeking a more visually dramatic and collector-oriented specification. Exclusive dark-finished forged wheels and additional carbon detailing help separate it from the standard model.

Pricing for the Carbon Series is expected to begin around $375,000, with heavily optioned examples potentially exceeding $425,000 depending on bespoke customization and track-focused equipment.

3. Mustang GTD Liquid Carbon Edition

The Liquid Carbon Edition is considered the most visually extreme and technically sophisticated version of the GTD lineup. Unveiled at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, this model eliminates nearly all traditional exterior paint, exposing the entire carbon-fiber body beneath a clear protective finish.

The production process for the Liquid Carbon Edition is exceptionally complex because each exposed panel must align perfectly to maintain a continuous weave pattern throughout the body. Ford also reduced weight slightly compared to the Carbon Series by eliminating additional painted components.

Because of its rarity and labor-intensive construction, the Liquid Carbon Edition is expected to command prices starting around $430,000. Highly customized builds could approach or surpass the $500,000 mark, making it one of the most expensive Mustangs ever produced.

4. Mustang GTD Competition Package

The Competition Package transforms the GTD into its most track-focused specification. Featuring a larger active rear wing with Drag Reduction System capability, revised front dive planes, an enlarged splitter, and active underbody aerodynamics, this variant prioritizes maximum downforce and lap-time performance.

Ford also equips the package with forged magnesium wheels to reduce unsprung weight and sharpen handling response. At high speeds, the active aerodynamic system can generate up to 885 kilograms of downforce, giving the car stability comparable to professional GT race machinery.

The Competition Package is offered as an upgrade package rather than a standalone trim, typically adding an estimated $40,000 to $60,000 over the base GTD. A fully configured Competition-spec GTD can easily exceed $450,000 depending on additional options.

5. Ford Mustang GTD Spirit of America

Ford has unveiled a new Spirit of America special edition of its Mustang GTD, the brand’s extreme “race car for the road,” featuring distinctive styling upgrades and aerodynamic enhancements. The name pays tribute to the legendary jet-powered land speed record cars driven by motorsport icon Craig Breedlove, with Ford drawing inspiration from his innovation, determination, and pioneering spirit for this exclusive variant. More broadly, the model honors Ford’s deep-rooted motorsports legacy, particularly the Mustang’s racing pedigree that stretches back to the car’s 1964 debut.

The Spirit of America Mustang GTD receives several visual and performance-oriented updates, including a carbon-fiber front splitter, a redesigned rear diffuser, and an oversized rear wing for improved aerodynamics. Its exterior is finished in Performance White and accented by bold Race Red and Lightning Blue stripes running from the front fascia over the roof and down the rear of the car. Ford is expected to build the special edition in very limited quantities, adding to its exclusivity.

Pricing for the standard Mustang GTD starts at around $325,000, while reports indicate the Spirit of America edition carries an estimated starting price of approximately $429,000 before options. Fully optioned examples could exceed the $600,000 mark.

6. “Spirit of America” Heritage Edition

The Spirit of America edition celebrates Ford’s racing heritage and America’s 250th anniversary through a unique patriotic visual treatment. Distinguished by asymmetrical red, white, and blue striping running across the body, the model emphasizes exclusivity and collector appeal rather than additional performance upgrades.

While mechanically similar to the standard GTD, this heritage-focused edition is expected to be produced in extremely limited numbers, increasing its desirability among collectors. Unique badging, exclusive trim details, and commemorative styling cues further separate it from the rest of the lineup.

Pricing is expected to begin around $400,000, though limited-production examples could see substantially higher values on the collector market due to rarity and demand.

Interior Design & Specialized Materials

Because the rear compartment is occupied by the pushrod suspension system, transaxle cooling hardware, and additional heat exchangers, the Mustang GTD eliminates rear seating entirely in favor of performance-focused packaging.

Inside, the cockpit centers around deeply bolstered RECARO racing seats finished in premium leather and Miko suede. Drivers interact with a thick-rimmed flat-bottom steering wheel featuring integrated controls and a 12.4-inch digital instrument display designed for track telemetry and high-performance driving.

One of the most unique elements of the cabin is Ford’s use of recycled titanium sourced from retired Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor fighter jets. The titanium is utilized in the steering wheel paddle shifters, rotary dial shifter, and serialized interior plaque through advanced 3D-printing technology.
