Built on Ford’s updated Mustang platform, which now accommodated the powerful big-block V-8 engines, the new 428 Police Interceptor-powered GT500 from Shelby American made its debut in 1967. With a conservative rating of 355 HP, though its actual output neared 400 horsepower, the GT500 unleashed 420 lb-ft of torque, earning acclaim from Car and Driver for its effortless performance compared to its predecessor, the old 350.

Shelby’s 1967 lineup marked the end of an era as the final cars produced before production shifted from Shelby American to Ionia, Michigan, under direct control of Ford Motor Company for the years 1968 through 1969. Only 2,048 examples of these potent performers were built in 1967.

The Shelby GT500’s release signaled a wave of change for subsequent high-output Mustang production. While the GT350 once stood as the premier Shelby performer, it would slowly begin taking a back seat to the more robust GT500. This would be further exemplified in the year to follow, when the GT350 would have its output significantly cut, as its 289 cubic-inch powerplant was removed as a standard offering. For all intents and purposes, the GT500 now stood head and shoulders above all other vehicles within the Shelby line.
