Ford offered the 2016 Shelby GT350 and GT350R in limited numbers as track-ready Mustangs with numerous unique high-performance components. This included Ford’s first-time utilization of a flat-plane crankshaft, similar to those found in racing exotics like Porsche and Ferrari. The “Voodoo” 5.2L DOHC V-8, with an 8,200 RPM redline, produced 526 HP, making it the highest ever for a naturally aspirated Ford engine at the time.
The S550 Mustang’s independent rear suspension already provided advanced handling, and the Shelby enhanced track performance with another Ford first—MagneRide dampers that adjusted automatically based on input from wheel-positioning sensors.
The high-tech suspension was complemented by Michelin tires and Brembo brakes, featuring six-piston at the front and four-piston at the rear. The front bodywork, made from aluminum, was optimized for aerodynamics, sloping some 2 inches lower than a standard Mustang GT to increase downforce at speed. All 2016 GT350s were equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission and 3.73 Torsen limited-slip differential.
In addition to the standard GT350 package, the R-model boasted a more aggressive front splitter, a uniquely shaped carbon-fiber rear wing, special chassis tuning, and distinctive 19-inch carbon-fiber wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires. For weight savings, the GT350R excluded a rear seat, exhaust resonators, and extras like the audio system, rearview camera, and auxiliary gauges.
