Ford is expanding the Mustang Dark Horse family with a model that combines supercharged V8 performance and open-air driving: the new Mustang Dark Horse SC convertible. Described by Ford Racing as the most powerful open-top Mustang ever produced, the convertible marks the return of a high-performance Mustang drop-top after a 13-year absence. Orders are scheduled to open in fall 2026, with vehicles expected to reach dealerships in spring 2027.
At its core, the Dark Horse SC convertible is the open-air counterpart to the recently introduced Dark Horse SC coupe. While the coupe is engineered with an emphasis on outright track capability, Ford Racing has given the convertible a different mission. Rather than chasing lap records, it is positioned as a high-performance grand tourer designed to deliver extreme power with a more relaxed, street-focused character.
Supercharged V8 Delivers 795 HP
Power comes from a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 producing 795 hp and 660 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, giving the convertible rapid gear changes and allowing drivers to access its considerable performance without the demands of a traditional manual gearbox.
That combination makes the Dark Horse SC convertible substantially more than a cosmetic drop-top variant. With nearly 800 hp on tap, it becomes the most powerful factory-built open-air Mustang in the model’s history.
Tuned for Grand Touring
Ford Racing engineers began with the rigid chassis architecture of the Dark Horse SC but recalibrated the car’s next-generation MagneRide suspension for road use. The objective was to preserve body control and stability while delivering a more compliant ride than the track-oriented coupe.
The result is intended to make the convertible equally comfortable cruising on the highway and attacking a winding road. Ford describes the setup as a balance between smooth grand-touring behavior and the planted response expected from a high-performance Mustang.
Open-Air Character and Styling
The convertible roof operates at the push of a button, transforming the cabin and exposing occupants to the distinctive soundtrack of the supercharged V8 and its accompanying induction whine. The seven-speed dual-clutch transmission further emphasizes the car’s effortless performance character.
Visually, the Dark Horse SC convertible receives its own identity within the Mustang lineup. Ford highlights Precision Purple Metallic paint, distinctive brake-caliper finishes and an interior combining Black Onyx and Space Gray details.
The Mustang Dark Horse SC convertible ultimately represents a different interpretation of Ford Racing performance: less focused on lap times and more concerned with delivering unrestricted, high-speed enjoyment. With 795 hp, a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 and genuine open-air capability, it is set to become one of the most potent Mustang convertibles ever offered when deliveries begin in spring 2027.
