The 1970 Boss 429, with its aggressive Fastback body style, retained its iconic features such as the chin spoiler, “Boss 429” badging, and pronounced hood scoop. However, the hood scoops were now painted flat black. The front configuration changed to twin dual-beam headlights with matching air intakes, while the rear fender air scoops were removed.
Inside, the Boss 429 boasted Ford’s Interior Decor group, featuring “Comfortweave” vinyl bucket seats, teak wood-grained trim, and a Rim-Blow steering wheel. The Visibility group added various lights and a glove box lock.
Additional interior features included Deluxe seat belts with warning lights and an optional upgrade instrument panel with an 8,000 RPM tachometer. Unlike previous Mustang models, it lacked a fold-down rear seat, offering a choice of black or white interiors.
The highlight of the Boss 429 was its powerful engine, officially rated at 375 HP @ 5,200 RPM, though widely believed to exceed 500 HP. The 429 cubic-inch V8 featured high-performance aluminum heads, a solid lifter camshaft, and an upgraded Holley carburetor. The exhaust system was revised for improved performance.
Power was transmitted through a Toploader four-speed manual transmission and a 9-inch Traction-Lok differential, delivered to the rear wheels via 31-spline axles. Ford’s competition suspension package with hydraulic shocks, heavy-duty leaf springs, and anti-roll bars ensured exceptional handling. The Mustang rode on 15 x 7-inch Magnum 500 wheels with Goodyear Polyglas tires.
Despite its legendary status and race-worthy performance, the Boss 429 was discontinued before the 1971 model year. Today, it remains a revered and iconic part of Mustang history and you now have the chance to own one courtesy of Bring A Trailer.
