In 1967, Shelby American unveiled the new GT500, derived from Ford’s updated Mustang, which had been modified to house Ford’s potent big-block V-8 engines. Sporting the 428 Police Interceptor engine, the GT500 debuted with a conservative 355 HP rating, though its true output neared an impressive 400 horsepower. With a substantial 420 lb-ft of torque, it earned a reputation as a genuine pavement-scorcher.
The introduction of the GT500 added a distinctive grand-touring essence to Shelby’s lineup of performance cars based on the Mustang. These 1967 models marked the conclusion of an era, being the last ones manufactured under Shelby American’s management before production shifted to Ionia, Michigan, under direct control of Ford Motor Company for the 1968 and 1969 model years.
Only 2,048 of these potent and highly sophisticated GT500s were built in 1967, and one of them is currently available for sale on Bring A Trailer. Originally delivered to Victor Ford of Wauconda, Illinois, this particular example spent time in several states before it was refurbished that was completed in 2003.
Presented in Wimbledon White with blue stripes over black vinyl upholstery, the car is driven by a 428ci V8, initially paired with an automatic transmission but later equipped with a four-speed Toploader in the 1980s.
Noteworthy features include a roller camshaft, an additional cooling package, Magnaflow mufflers, 15” Magstar wheels, power steering, power-assisted front disc brakes, a push-button AM radio, three-point front seat belts, and a fold-down rear bench.
