1965 Shelby GT350 Fastback

The 1965 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350, a pinnacle of American muscle car history, made a lasting impact with its iconic design. Each of these cars was Wimbledon White with Guardsman Blue stripes and featured fiberglass hoods, as well as Shelby badging. Other notable exterior features included a hood-mounted air scoop, open grille, distinctive fiberglass front apron, GT350 rocker panel striping, and enlarged fender flares to accommodate the car’s Goodyear Blue Dot tires, which were mounted on 15 x 7 inch wheels.

The Shelby GT350’s most significant improvements took place under the hood, where an eager Shelby heavily modified the stock Mustang’s Hi-Po 289 cubic-inch V-8, which already produced a respectable 271 HP. Each GT350’s engine was stripped of its stock cast-iron intake, in favor of a Cobra Hi-Rise manifold. A Holley four-barrel 715-cfm carburetor was then installed, as were lightweight tubular Tri-Y exhaust headers. A much larger radiator was borrowed from the Ford Galaxy 500, and placed into the GT350, to keep overheating at bay.

This specific GT350 scheduled to be auctioned by Mecum Auctions on January 12, is one of 562 built in 1965 and was a subject of extensive restoration that adheres to SAAC/MCA concours specifications. Delivered new to Gene Hamon Ford in Texas City, Texas, it served as a factory demonstrator before receiving extensive restoration work. The attention to detail is evident in the paintwork, replicating the original assembly line finish. The interior features correct elements such as the dash-mounted pod with an 8,000 RPM tachometer, racing lap belts, wood-rimmed steering wheel, and factory radio-delete plate.

The undercarriage showcases quality finishing, mimicking the factory-style red-oxide primer with body-color overspray and blacked-out pinch welds. The front and rear suspension underwent meticulous restoration, including accurate finishes and markings. The car’s distinct appearance and sound are amplified by the factory side-exiting exhaust and Blue Dot tires on optional Cragar wheels. Since the restoration’s completion, the vehicle has undergone minimal testing and has been stored in a controlled environment.
