Now available on Bring a Trailer, this 1968 Shelby Mustang GT500 represents an important chapter in the evolution of Shelby’s legendary performance cars. For the 1968 model year, Ford shifted Shelby Mustang production from California to Michigan, a move intended to reduce the logistical burden of transporting unfinished Mustangs to Shelby’s operation. The styling remained closely related to the 1967 cars, but Shelby expanded the range by offering convertibles for the first time. The year also introduced the GT500 KR as the flagship model. With just 4,451 Shelby Mustangs built for 1968, these cars are widely regarded as the final generation developed under Shelby’s direct influence before Ford assumed greater control of the program for 1969.
This particular GT500 is one of only 1,020 fastbacks produced during the 1968 model year and was completed on January 16. It was originally specified in Candyapple Red with black knitted Décor upholstery and equipped with the Interior Décor and Visibility groups, Extra Cooling Package, power steering, front disc brakes, Sport Deck rear seat, tilt-away steering wheel, AM radio, and tachometer. The car subsequently underwent restoration under previous ownership.
Visually, the GT500 remains unmistakable. Its Shelby-specific bodywork includes a prominent ducktail rear spoiler, extended front fenders, sail- and quarter-panel air scoops, and a fiberglass ventilated hood incorporating a functional ram-air-style scoop. GT500 side stripes complement the Candyapple Red finish, while inboard grille-mounted high-beam headlights and dual exhaust outlets reinforce its aggressive appearance. Aluminum 10-spoke 15-inch wheels with Shelby Cobra center caps are fitted with Goodyear Speedway 70-15 tires.
Underneath, Shelby upgraded the Mustang’s chassis to cope with its big-block performance. Heavy-duty coil springs and an anti-roll bar were used at the front, while heavy-duty leaf springs supported the rear axle. Power steering improves maneuverability, and braking is handled by power-assisted front discs paired with rear drums.
Inside, black knitted Décor upholstery covers the front bucket seats and folding Sport Deck rear seat. The Visibility Group added courtesy lighting beneath the dashboard and illumination for the glovebox, trunk, and engine compartment. A Shelby-standard roll bar with inertia-reel seatbelts is also present, while an AM/FM radio has been retrofitted. The woodgrain tilt-away steering wheel frames a 140-mph speedometer, 8,000-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges monitoring fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and amperage.
Power comes from the factory 428ci V8, breathing through a four-barrel Holley carburetor and rated at 360 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. The Extra Cooling Package added a larger radiator, while power reaches the rear wheels through a three-speed automatic transmission. The selling dealer has also replaced the muffler, completing the car’s current mechanical presentation.
