Now available on Car & Bids, this 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R Hennessey HPE850 represents an unusually potent interpretation of Ford’s track-focused S550 Mustang. Finished in Shadow Black and paired with an Ebony-and-red interior, the car combines the factory GT350R’s motorsport-inspired engineering with extensive upgrades from Hennessey Performance Engineering.
At the center of the transformation is Hennessey’s HPE850 package, which substantially increases the output of the GT350R’s naturally aspirated 5.2-liter Voodoo V8. In factory specification, the flat-plane-crankshaft engine produced 526 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque. Hennessey claims that its modifications raise those figures to 850 horsepower and 673 lb-ft, although the listing does not include a dyno sheet independently verifying the advertised output. Power continues to reach the rear wheels through the factory six-speed manual transmission, preserving one of the defining characteristics of the GT350 platform.
The HPE850 conversion incorporates a 3.0-liter supercharger system, high-flow throttle body, upgraded fuel injectors, high-flow heat exchanger, and revised air-induction system. The package also includes a 91-octane ECU calibration designed to coordinate the additional airflow and fueling requirements created by forced induction. Hennessey identification is integrated throughout the vehicle with exterior badging and serialized plaques installed on the dashboard and engine.
The underlying GT350R was already one of the most technically sophisticated versions of the sixth-generation Mustang. Introduced for 2016, the GT350 brought Ford’s distinctive flat-plane V8 to the S550 architecture, along with a model-specific aerodynamic package and chassis enhancements developed with track driving in mind. The sixth-generation Mustang itself debuted for 2015 with independent rear suspension, marking a major departure from the live-axle arrangement used by earlier generations.
This example retains significant factory performance equipment, including Equipment Group 920A, the Technology Package, Brembo brake calipers, MagneRide adaptive damping, Recaro sport seats, and carbon-fiber interior trim. Cloth and Miko suede upholstery further distinguish the cabin.
With the GT350R’s sophisticated chassis serving as the foundation and Hennessey’s supercharged powertrain modifications dramatically expanding its performance envelope, this Mustang occupies a particularly interesting position between factory-built track weapon and high-output aftermarket creation. Its combination of a manual transmission, flat-plane V8 character, MagneRide suspension, Recaro seating, and claimed 850-horsepower output makes it a compelling example of how far the S550 platform can be pushed beyond its original specification.
