This 2018 Ford Performance 50th Anniversary Mustang Cobra Jet commemorates five decades of one of Ford’s most significant drag racing nameplates. Built to celebrate the original 1968 Cobra Jet Mustang, this limited-production, competition-focused machine combines a supercharged V8, specialized drag racing hardware, and factory-developed performance engineering. The example currently offered on Bring a Trailer is chassis No. 65 of just 68 cars produced.
Supercharged 5.2-Liter V8 Power
At the heart of this Cobra Jet is an aluminum 5.2-liter V8 fitted with a 3.0-liter Whipple supercharger. Ford Performance upgrades include forged pistons, H-beam connecting rods, titanium valves, an ATI Super Damper, and a dedicated intake system. Kooks long-tube exhaust headers complete the engine package.
Ford did not develop the Cobra Jet as a conventional street Mustang. Instead, its powertrain and supporting systems are configured for competitive drag racing, prioritizing acceleration and repeatable performance over everyday comfort.
Power reaches the rear wheels through a T4 three-speed racing transmission and an aluminum driveshaft. A Strange Engineering 9-inch solid rear axle uses a spool with 3.89:1 gearing and forged drivetrain components. The rear suspension features a four-link arrangement with Panhard and anti-sway bars to help manage weight transfer during hard launches.
Purpose-Built Drag Racing Hardware
Finished in Oxford White with black-and-gold vintage-inspired Cobra Jet graphics and commemorative badging, the car features a carbon-fiber hood, a wheelie bar, and a parachute system. Forged-aluminum RC Components wheels measure four inches wide at the front and 10 inches at the rear, wearing Mickey Thompson ET competition tires.
Strange Engineering supplies the two-way adjustable coilover suspension and multi-piston brake calipers, while slotted rotors provide braking capability. These components reflect the Cobra Jet’s dedicated competition role rather than the compromises required of a road-going Mustang.
The stripped interior reinforces that purpose. It includes Racetech fixed-back seats, a Watson Racing NHRA-certified roll cage, an RJS driver harness and window net, a Sparco quick-release steering wheel, and a RacePak digital dashboard display. A Speedmaster ratchet shifter and line-lock controls support drag-strip operation. The car lacks air conditioning and a stereo, and its passenger seat is intended for NHRA Stock-class compliance rather than passenger use.
Auction Details and Collectibility
Purchased new in November 2019, this Cobra Jet comes with a copy of its original sales invoice, dated November 7, 2019, showing a total purchase price of $170,475, along with factory literature. The seller estimates adding just two miles during ownership, although the car has no odometer.
Currently offered without reserve on Bring a Trailer, the Mustang is located in Stillwater, Minnesota. It has no title because it was not intended for street registration and is being sold with a bill of sale. As one of only 68 examples built for the model’s 50th anniversary, this Cobra Jet represents a specialized chapter in Mustang history: a factory-engineered drag racing car designed to honor the legacy of Ford’s original quarter-mile legend.
