In 1968, Shelby automobile production shifted to Michigan under Ford control, prompting comprehensive updates to the GT500 with new aggressive styling cues. Convertible variants of both the GT350 and GT500 debuted for the first time.
The 428 CI GT500 was a potent performer, but Shelby unveiled the GT 500KR “King of the Road,” featuring the hotter Cobra Jet 428 engine, supposedly rated at 335 HP but delivering more power in reality. The GT500KR also featured larger brakes, underhood bracing, and staggered rear shocks to manage wheel hop during hard acceleration.
The moniker “King of the Road” for the upgraded GT500KR was a playful dig at Chevrolet, which was set to release a new Corvette variant with the same name. This 1968 Shelby GT500KR Convertible, bearing Shelby No. 04415, is one of the rarest 1960s muscle cars, being one of only 518 GT500KR Convertibles produced in 1968.
Originally delivered to Willett Ford in Rockford, Illinois, this particular model left the factory in special-order #WT6066 yellow with a power-operated white soft top. It is equipped with a 428ci Cobra Jet V8 paired with a three-speed automatic transmission and finished in yellow over black vinyl.
It boasts abundant features, options, and amenities, including GT Equipment, Interior Décor, and Visibility groups. Additional equipment includes a power-operated black soft top, a roll hoop, functional hood scoops, a rear spoiler, power-assisted front disc brakes, power steering, 10-spoke 15″ aluminum wheels, a push-button AM/FM radio, and a heater.
This remarkable yellow GT500KR convertible is a fantastic example of one the most revered and collectible of all the big-muscle Mustangs, making it the ideal companion for storming down the local strip or cruising the open road on a rally or tour.
