Mustang Of The Day: 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R

In 1965, Carroll Shelby transformed the Ford Mustang from a mundane “secretary’s car” into a formidable racing contender. The triumphs of the Shelby GT350Rs on the track prompted the development of road-going Shelby GT350 models, available in various configurations until 1969.

Fast forward to 2015, where Ford Performance unveiled the third-generation Mustang at the North American International Auto Show. This track-focused Mustang boasted enhancements such as a front splitter, carbon fiber rear wing, and lighter, wider carbon fiber wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires.

Positioned as a competitor to the Z28 Camaro and Porsche 911 GT3, this racier GT350 variant remained in production until 2020, concluding with the final GT350Rs commemorating the model’s 55th anniversary.

The GT350R continues the legacy of its predecessor by delivering exceptional on-track performance while leveraging Ford’s modern expertise. Central to its prowess is the awe-inspiring Voodoo V-8 engine, a 5.2L all-aluminum powerplant featuring double overhead cams. Generating 526 HP, it produces a distinctive exhaust note characterized by its flat-plane crank, and an impressive peak RPM of 8,250.
