Now listed on Bring a Trailer, this 1968 Shelby Mustang GT350 Hertz Edition represents one of the rarest chapters in Shelby American’s partnership with the Hertz rental program. Building on the overwhelming success of the legendary 1966 GT350H “Rent-A-Racer” initiative, Shelby revived the concept for the 1968 model year in an effort to generate renewed excitement around the updated GT350.
Unlike the earlier program, however, Hertz significantly reduced its order, purchasing just 224 examples that were distributed to select rental locations and made available exclusively to members of the Hertz Sports Car Club. With total 1968 GT350 production reaching only 1,053 fastbacks, the Hertz-spec cars remain among the most collectible variants of the model.
This particular GT350 is one of those 224 Hertz cars and retains the classic combination of Shelby performance and grand touring comfort. Under the hood sits Ford’s 302-cubic-inch V8, paired with a three-speed automatic transmission that delivers power to the rear wheels. Factory equipment includes the desirable Extra Cooling Package, along with power steering, power-assisted front disc brakes, a dual exhaust system, and Shelby’s signature 15-inch 10-spoke aluminum wheels.
While originally delivered in Hertz livery, the car was refinished in Candy Apple Red with contrasting white GT350 side stripes during prior ownership, giving it a bold and timeless appearance. The unmistakable Shelby styling cues remain intact, including the lightweight fiberglass hood with functional ram-air scoops and hood pins, distinctive quarter-panel air scoops, fender extensions, and the signature ducktail rear spoiler. Additional exterior details include sequential taillights, a quarter-panel-mounted antenna, and polished dual exhaust outlets that reinforce its muscular presence.
The 15-inch aluminum wheels feature Shelby Cobra center caps and are wrapped in 215/65 BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires with raised white lettering, complementing the car’s period-correct performance aesthetic. The suspension benefits from power steering, while braking is handled by power-assisted front discs and rear drum brakes.
Inside, the cabin is trimmed in black vinyl and offers a blend of sporty design and everyday usability. Front bucket seats are paired with a folding rear bench, while amenities include a center console, factory-style air conditioning, a later AM/FM radio, and Stewart-Warner auxiliary gauges for monitoring oil pressure and electrical output. Ahead of the driver is a woodgrain steering wheel framing a 140-mph speedometer, an 8,000-rpm tachometer, an analog clock, and gauges for fuel level and engine temperature.
Factory-rated at 250 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, the 302 V8 breathes through a single four-barrel Holley carburetor. Combined with the optional Extra Cooling Package and Shelby’s proven performance upgrades, this exceptionally rare 1968 GT350H stands as a significant piece of American muscle car history and an increasingly desirable collectible.
