A striking 1968 Ford Mustang GT500CR 900S by Classic Recreations has surfaced on Bring a Trailer, representing one of the earliest examples of the company’s celebrated Eleanor-inspired builds. Developed to capture the unmistakable style of the 1967 Shelby GT500 made famous by Gone in 60 Seconds, this particular car is believed to be the very first GT500CR 900S customer example. Built before the model’s official debut at the 2012 SEMA Show, it carries Shelby chassis number SCR0031 and closely follows the original 900S prototype.
The project began with a factory 1968 C-code Mustang Fastback originally equipped with a 289 V8, specifically selected because its owner wanted an authentic V8 fastback as the foundation for the build. Classic Recreations then transformed the car into a modern high-performance machine, fitting it with a Windsor-based 427-cubic-inch V8 featuring a MASS-Flo electronic fuel injection system and an F1-R ProCharger supercharger. Supporting hardware includes MSD ignition, a Moroso fabricated oil pan, BBK long-tube headers, a Be Cool aluminum radiator with dual electric cooling fans, and MagnaFlow exhaust components. Early GT500CR 900S models were factory rated at approximately 790 horsepower, giving this Mustang performance to match its aggressive appearance.
Power is delivered through a Tremec five-speed manual transmission paired with a heavy-duty FAB9 nine-inch rear axle equipped with a limited-slip differential, while subframe connectors improve chassis rigidity. Handling has been thoroughly modernized thanks to a Mustang II-style independent front suspension, VariShock coilover dampers, front and rear sway bars, and a Rod & Custom rack-and-pinion steering system. Stopping power comes from large Wilwood disc brakes positioned behind 18-inch American Racing Halibrand-style wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport tires.
The exterior wears a Nightmist Blue finish accented by signature over-the-top racing stripes and Eleanor-inspired bodywork. Distinctive styling elements include integrated side-exit exhaust outlets within the rocker panels, hood pins, sequential taillights, and GT500CR badging that reinforces its Shelby-inspired identity.
Inside, the cabin blends vintage Mustang character with modern performance equipment. Shelby-branded SCAT Procar bucket seats are secured with Simpson racing harnesses, while a roll bar, Old Air Products air conditioning, center console, and a JVC touchscreen infotainment system connected to Kicker speakers add both comfort and functionality. A Shelby-style woodgrain steering wheel mounted on a Flaming River tilt column fronts Classic Instruments gauges featuring Shelby branding, including a 200-mph speedometer and tachometer. The odometer indicates just 369 miles since completion, underscoring the car’s exceptionally fresh condition and collector appeal.
