FOR SALE: 1967 Shelby Mustang GT500 Fastback

One of just 420 finished in the desirable combination of Nightmist Blue over black Décor upholstery

Offered for sale on Bring a Trailer, this 1967 Shelby GT500 is one of 2,048 examples produced for the model year and among just 420 finished in the desirable combination of Nightmist Blue over black Décor upholstery. Representing a pivotal moment in the evolution of Shelby’s high-performance Mustangs, the GT500 combined aggressive styling, big-block power, and enhanced comfort, marking a transition from the raw, competition-inspired Shelby models of the mid-1960s to more refined grand touring machines.

For 1967, Ford substantially redesigned the Mustang, increasing its overall dimensions to accommodate larger engines and provide a more substantial road presence. Shelby American took full advantage of the updated platform, creating a car that stood apart visually from its factory counterpart.

The GT500 received an extended fiberglass front end, a unique grille with integrated high-beam lamps mounted within the mesh, a scooped hood, functional-looking side scoops on the sail panels and front quarter sections, and a distinctive rear treatment featuring a ducktail spoiler and taillights borrowed from the Mercury Cougar. This example has been restored in its factory-correct Nightmist Blue finish accented by contrasting white racing stripes.

Under the hood sits Shelby’s signature big-block powerplant, derived from Ford’s 428-cubic-inch Police Interceptor V8. Unlike the standard Mustang’s available 390 V8, the GT500’s engine was fitted with dual 600-cfm four-barrel carburetors mounted atop an aluminum intake manifold, producing a factory-rated 355 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. The model designation itself was not tied to any mechanical specification; rather, Carroll Shelby selected the GT500 name simply because he appreciated the bold, memorable figure.

The correct 428 engine remains equipped with hallmark Shelby components, including finned aluminum valve covers and the distinctive oblong finned air cleaner assembly. An optional extra-cooling package further enhances durability, while power is delivered through a rugged Toploader four-speed manual transmission. Power steering and power-assisted brakes, both mandatory Shelby-installed equipment, contribute to the car’s impressive drivability.

Inside, the GT500 reflects Shelby’s move toward greater refinement without sacrificing performance credentials. The cabin incorporates Ford’s Deluxe Mustang interior along with the Décor Interior Group, Courtesy Light Group, and the desirable Sport Deck folding rear seat option.

To supplement the Mustang’s already comprehensive factory instrumentation, Shelby added Stewart-Warner oil pressure and amperage gauges housed beneath the push-button radio, providing the driver with additional engine-monitoring capability while preserving the purposeful character expected of a Shelby performance car.
