The 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 429 remains one of the most significant factory-built muscle cars of the classic era, created primarily to satisfy NASCAR homologation requirements for Ford’s 429-cubic-inch racing engine. Produced for only the 1969 and 1970 model years, the Boss 429 was extensively reworked by Kar Kraft of Brighton, Michigan, with every example receiving a serialized production number. This particular car, now listed on Bring a Trailer, carries Kar Kraft serial number 2210 and was completed on October 13, 1969.
Originally finished in Grabber Blue with a white interior, the Mustang combines its distinctive appearance with a highly desirable factory drivetrain. Its Boss 429 V8 is paired with a close-ratio four-speed manual transmission and an optional 3.91:1 Traction-Lok differential, the latter included as part of the Drag Pack specification. Additional factory equipment included Competition suspension, power steering, front disc brakes, 15-inch Magnum 500-style wheels, and F60x15 Goodyear Polyglas GT tires.
The Boss 429’s chassis was substantially different from that of an ordinary Mustang. Kar Kraft incorporated revised front control arms, a higher-rate front anti-roll bar, a rear anti-roll bar, and staggered rear shocks to improve handling and manage the additional weight and performance of the big-block engine. Power-assisted braking was standard, combining heavy-duty front hubs and rotors with oversized spindles and front discs, while rear drums handled braking duties at the back.
Visually, the car carries the unmistakable Boss 429 treatment, including a prominent hood scoop, front spoiler, dual side mirrors, dedicated badging, and dual exhaust outlets. Inside, high-back bucket seats and the rear bench are trimmed in White Corinthian vinyl with Clarion knit accents. Simulated woodgrain finishes extend across the dashboard, console, and door panels, complemented by an AM radio, clock, deluxe seatbelts, rim-blow steering wheel, and Hurst shifter.
Instrumentation includes a 120-mph speedometer, 8,000-rpm tachometer, and fuel gauge, with Stewart-Warner oil-pressure and temperature gauges mounted centrally. Controls for the engine choke and hood scoop are positioned low on the dashboard near the accelerator.
At the heart of the Boss 429 is Ford’s specialized 429ci V8, featuring distinctive crescent-shaped combustion chambers, an aluminum intake manifold, and a Holley 735-cfm four-barrel carburetor. Factory output was rated at 375 horsepower, making the Boss 429 one of the most technically ambitious and collectible Mustangs of its generation.
