FOR SALE: 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 429 Drag Pack

One of 499 Boss 429 fastbacks produced for 1970

For dedicated Ford performance enthusiasts, few cars rival the legendary Boss 429 Mustang. Built solely to homologate Ford’s new Boss 429 engine for NASCAR Grand National racing, the “Boss Nine” was largely hand-assembled by Kar Kraft in Brighton, Michigan. Fitting the massive engine required major structural changes to the Mustang, including relocating the front shock towers.

The Boss 429 came fully equipped for performance, featuring a Toploader close-ratio 4-speed manual transmission, a 9-inch Traction-Lok rear axle with 3.91 gears, an engine oil cooler, trunk-mounted battery, competition suspension with front and rear anti-roll bars, staggered rear shocks, power front disc brakes, Magnum 500 wheels, and F60x15 raised white-letter tires.

Ford officially rated the street-spec Boss 429 at 375 horsepower, though its true output was believed to exceed 500 horsepower. Its real-world performance proved it, with properly tuned examples capable of quarter-mile runs in the 12-second range using slicks and minor modifications.

Priced at $4,087, the Boss 429 was the most expensive non-Shelby Mustang of its era. Ford built 859 examples for 1969, including two Boss Cougars, followed by roughly 499 units for 1970 before the company ended its dominant Total Performance racing program.

This example currently listed on Bring a Trailer is one of 499 Boss 429 fastbacks produced for 1970 and carries Kar Kraft serial number KK 2371. Finished in Grabber Blue with a black vinyl interior, it underwent a concours-level restoration 20 years ago. Factory-equipped with the Drag Pack and competition suspension, it also features a four-speed manual transmission, 3.91 Traction-Lok differential, power steering, and power front disc brakes.

Inside, the cabin includes black vinyl high-back bucket seats, a rear bench seat, and simulated woodgrain trim across the dashboard, console, and door panels. Features include a Philco AM radio, center console, Hurst T-handle shifter, deluxe seatbelts with reminder light, heater, convenience and décor groups, and a Rim Blow deluxe steering wheel.

The car rides on 15-inch Magnum 500 wheels wrapped in Goodyear Polyglas GT tires. Suspension upgrades unique to the Boss 429 included revised control arms, a larger front anti-roll bar, rear anti-roll bar, and staggered rear shocks. Braking consisted of power-assisted front discs and rear drums, reinforced with heavy-duty hubs, rotors, and oversized spindles, while power steering was standard equipment.
