The Cobra R was produced for the model years 1993, 1995, and 2000 as a track-oriented car. The noteworthy aspect of the 2000 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra R is its exclusivity for that year, as it was the sole Cobra available. Due to horsepower rating issues from the 1999 Cobra, there was no “regular” Cobra until 2001, making the 2000 Cobra R the only SVT Mustang manufactured that year.
To minimize weight, the Cobra R omitted features such as air conditioning, cruise control, sound deadening, a rear seat, and an audio system. Many components of the Cobra R would later become integral to the Mustang lineup, particularly its engine based on the F150 truck block. The heads of the Cobra R’s engine were later revised and utilized in the 2005 Ford GT. SVT’s influence on the aftermarket played a crucial role in shaping subsequent cars, including the 2003-2004 Cobra.
Ford produced only 300 Cobra Rs during a single-model-year run in 2000, making them instantly collectible and exceptionally rare, like this one currently auctioned on Bring A Trailer. This example was initially delivered to Kip Killmon’s Tysons Ford in Vienna, Virginia and has only 56 miles since new.
Like the rest of 2000 Cobra Rs, it is finished in Performance Red over Dark Charcoal cloth and is equipped with a 5.4-liter DOHC V8 producing 385 horsepower and 385 lb-ft of torque. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential.
The list of equipment includes a removable front splitter, a cowl hood, a rear wing, 18″ wheels, Brembo front brakes, Eibach springs, Bilstein shocks, independent rear suspension, a high-performance exhaust system, Recaro sport seats, and remote keyless entry.
