1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429

The Boss 429, a “big block” version, was introduced in mid-1969 to homologate the “semi-hemi” 429-cubic-inch V-8 engine for NASCAR and NHRA drag racing. To meet the requirement of producing a minimum of 500 units for public consumption for series racing, the Mustang was chosen over the more fitting Ford Torino, despite the 429 being better suited under the Torino’s hood.

Kar Kraft of Brighton, Michigan, made significant modifications to fit the large engine into the Mustang’s engine bay, mainly to accommodate the massive headers. The engine, quoted at 375 horsepower, likely exceeded that, possibly reaching close to 500 horsepower. The Boss 429 was a serious machine, lacking flashy striping and eccentric decorations, except for the callouts on the front fenders. Only 859 units were produced in 1969.

Commissioned by Ford, Kar Kraft modified Cobra Jet Mustangs with a larger 429ci V8 featuring “crescent”-shaped combustion chambers. The factory specifications included an aluminum intake manifold and a four-barrel Holley 735-cfm carburetor, delivering 375 horsepower. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission and a Traction-Lok differential.
