FOR SALE: 1968 Shelby Mustang GT500 Fastback

Equipped with the legendary high-performance 427ci Side Oiler V8 engine

Offered for sale through Bring a Trailer, this 1968 Shelby GT500 Fastback represents a compelling blend of factory Shelby heritage and period-correct performance enhancement. One of just 1,020 GT500 fastbacks produced for the 1968 model year, the car was originally delivered in the iconic Highland Green finish paired with Saddle Décor upholstery and equipped with an impressive list of factory options. These included power steering, front disc brakes, the Extra Cooling Package, a tilt-away steering column, Sport Deck rear seating, an AM radio, and a tachometer, reflecting Shelby’s focus on combining performance with everyday usability.

While retaining its authentic GT500 identity, the car’s most significant transformation occurred during the 1970s when it is believed to have received a 427-cubic-inch Side Oiler V8, one of Ford’s most revered high-performance big-block engines. Renowned for its racing pedigree and exceptional durability, the Side Oiler substantially elevates the Mustang’s performance credentials beyond its original specification.

The vehicle underwent a comprehensive refurbishment between 2002 and the current owner’s acquisition in 2005. As part of the restoration process, the 427 engine was rebuilt using Ross forged flat-top pistons and a solid-lifter COMP Cams camshaft, creating a robust foundation for both reliability and power. The engine is further enhanced by an aluminum dual-plane intake manifold and a Holley 780-cfm carburetor, while a PerTronix ignition module ensures improved ignition performance. Ceramic-coated Hooker headers complement the package, helping optimize exhaust flow and engine efficiency.

To support the increased output, the cooling system has been modernized with an upgraded aluminum radiator and more recent cooling-system improvements, ensuring dependable operation under demanding conditions. Power is delivered through a rebuilt C6 three-speed automatic transmission fitted with a shift kit, providing firmer and more responsive gear changes. A replacement 3.50:1 limited-slip differential was also installed, enhancing traction and overall drivability.

Visually, the GT500 retains the distinctive styling elements that defined Shelby’s flagship Mustang. The Highland Green exterior is accented by GT500 side stripes and features the model’s signature ducktail rear spoiler, fiberglass ventilated hood with ram-air scoop, fender extensions, and functional-looking sail-panel and quarter-panel scoops. Riding on aluminum 10-spoke 15-inch wheels wrapped in Cooper Cobra tires, the car benefits from Shelby’s upgraded suspension package, including heavy-duty front coil springs, a front anti-roll bar, and reinforced rear leaf springs.

Inside, the refurbished cabin showcases Saddle Décor bucket seats and a blend of vintage and period-upgrade features. Entertainment is provided by a Motorola AM/FM radio with an integrated 8-track player, aftermarket kick-panel speakers, and a 100-watt amplifier, completing a classic muscle car that combines collectible Shelby provenance with legendary Ford big-block performance.
