The Shelby Mustang GT350 debuted in 1965 with a modified Ford 289ci (4.7-liter) small-block V8, generating 306bhp. Competition options included a 340-360bhp unit or a supercharged 400bhp engine. Early Shelby Mustangs featured a stock four-speed Borg-Warner manual gearbox, later supplemented by a heavy-duty three-speed automatic as an option.

To handle the heightened performance, the GT350’s running gear saw upgrades, including optional Kelsey-Hayes front disc brakes, a robust Ford Galaxie rear axle, Koni adjustable shock absorbers, and aluminum-alloy wheels. Initially lacking rear seats, the GT350 was classified as a two-seat sports car. Visually, Shelby’s GT350 closely resembled the standard version, distinguished primarily by racing stripes along the body centerline. On the road, the distinction in performance was unmistakable.

As an iconic muscle car from the 1960s, the Shelby Mustang maintained its foundation in the stock version. It adopted the latter’s styling changes and mechanical enhancements while preserving its distinctive features until production ceased in 1970.
