FOR SALE: 1966 Shelby Mustang GT350H

One of 1,000 built for Hertz in 1966

The 1966 Shelby Mustang GT350H represents one of the most distinctive chapters in American performance-car history, combining Carroll Shelby’s motorsport-inspired engineering with Ford’s partnership with Hertz. This Raven Black example, offered on Bring a Trailer, stands out for its documented history, long-term ownership, and award-winning restoration.

A Rare Piece of Shelby and Hertz History

The GT350H was developed through the collaboration between Shelby American and Hertz, creating a high-performance Mustang that customers could rent through the company’s Rent-A-Racer program. Approximately 1,000 examples were produced for 1966, making the model a particularly desirable variant among Shelby collectors.

According to its original invoice, this car was ordered by Hertz in January 1966. Chassis SFM6S711 subsequently became part of the GT350H lineage, and the seller acquired it in 1999. Its documentation includes a copy of the original invoice, a Shelby American Automobile Club (SAAC) registry entry, a National Shelby Registry certificate, and the owner’s manual.

Factory Specification and Mechanical Details

Finished in Raven Black with gold GT350 side stripes, the Shelby retains the period-correct appearance associated with the Hertz models. Chrome bumpers and 14-inch Magnum wheels fitted with Goodyear Blue Streak tires complement its understated exterior.

Underneath, the GT350 benefits from the chassis modifications that distinguished Shelby’s Mustangs from their standard Ford counterparts. These include revised front suspension geometry, quick-steering idler and pitman arms, stiffer springs, a larger front anti-roll bar, and rear traction bars. Kelsey-Hayes front disc brakes and larger rear drum brakes provide additional stopping capability.

Power comes from a replacement 289-cubic-inch High Performance V8. The seller states that the car originally left the factory with a Holley Le Mans carburetor, and the engine is paired with a three-speed automatic transmission. A brake booster, optional AM radio, and black vinyl bucket seats round out the specification.

Award-Winning Restoration

John Brown of Thoroughbred Restorations in Piedmont, Oklahoma, completed the car’s restoration in 2023, with contributions from several Shelby marque specialists. The results earned three Division 2 Concours Gold awards: at the 2023 Indiana SAAC Fall Classic, the 2024 Mustang Club of America 60th Anniversary celebration, and SAAC-49 in 2024.

With nearly three decades of ownership by the seller, substantial documentation, and recognized concours credentials, this 1966 Shelby Mustang GT350H offers collectors an appealing combination of provenance and presentation.
