This 1966 Shelby Mustang GT350H, one of the most recognizable collaborations between Carroll Shelby and the American automotive industry, is now offered for auction on Bring a Trailer. Finished in Wimbledon White with gold stripes over black vinyl upholstery, this example combines classic Shelby performance modifications with the distinctive identity of the Hertz rental-car program.
A Rare Piece of Shelby and Hertz History
Approximately 1,000 GT350H examples were produced in 1966 through the partnership between Ford, Shelby American, and Hertz. The program allowed customers to rent a high-performance Mustang through Hertz’s Rent-A-Racer initiative, giving the GT350H a unique place in American performance-car history. The Mustang wears Wimbledon White paint complemented by dual gold stripes and GT350 side stripes.
This example features dual gold racing stripes, GT350 side stripes, hood pins, chrome bumpers, and chrome-plated 14-inch Magnum wheels wrapped in 265/50 BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires. Braking is handled by factory Kelsey-Hayes front discs and larger rear drums, while Shelby-specific chassis modifications include revised front suspension geometry, stiffer springs, a larger front sway bar, quick-steer steering components, and rear traction bars.
HiPo V8 Power and Period-Correct Details
Power comes from a 289-cubic-inch High Performance V8, modified with a cast-aluminum high-rise intake manifold, an Autolite carburetor, headers, a baffled aluminum oil pan, and cast-aluminum valve covers. Advertised output was 306 horsepower and 329 lb-ft of torque. A PerTronix Flame-Thrower ignition coil has also been installed. A three-speed automatic transmission sends power to the rear wheels, while the dual exhaust system incorporates MagnaFlow mufflers and an H-pipe.
Inside, the black vinyl cabin features low-back bucket seats, a Sport Deck rear seat, a roll bar, an AM radio, and a heater. A simulated wood-rimmed tilt-away steering wheel sits ahead of a 140-mph speedometer, while a Cobra-branded 9,000-rpm tachometer is mounted atop the dashboard. The five-digit odometer displays approximately 64,000 miles, including around 100 added under current ownership.
A Distinctive Shelby Mustang at Auction
According to the listing, chassis SFM6S1213 was initially delivered to Hertz in Cincinnati, Ohio, before being shipped to Fuller Ford, also in Cincinnati. The car underwent refurbishments in 1980 and 2006 before its current owner acquired it through a raffle in 2026. It is being offered on consignment by a dealer in Neptune, New Jersey, with transferable New York registration.
With its documented Hertz delivery history, recognizable white-and-gold livery, and Shelby-modified V8, this GT350H offers collectors an opportunity to acquire a distinctive chapter of 1960s American performance-car history. Its refurbishment history and automatic transmission will also be relevant considerations for buyers evaluating originality and long-term collectibility.
