In 1965, Carroll Shelby transformed the Ford Mustang from its status as a “secretary’s car” into a formidable racing vehicle. The on-track triumphs of the Shelby GT350Rs paved the way for the production of road-going Shelby GT350s, which were offered in various iterations until 1969.
Ford Performance introduced the third-generation GT350R in 2015 at the North American International Auto Show, featuring a 526 HP, flat-plane crank V-8 engine nestled within a track-focused Mustang body, enhanced with a front splitter, carbon fiber rear wing, and lighter, wider carbon fiber wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires.
Designed to rival the Z28 Camaro and Porsche 911 GT3, this performance-oriented version of the GT350 was available until 2020, with the final GT350Rs produced to commemorate the GT350’s 55th anniversary.
The example offered here courtesy of Bring A Trailer is a particularly rare model, being one of just 280 GT350R cars equipped with the optional Heritage Edition package (a $1,965 option). This package gets the car finished in the iconic Wimbledon White with blue racing stripes color scheme reminiscent of the original 1965 racing variants. This virtually new example has only 10 miles on the odometer, with the seats protected by plastic covers.
Featuring a Tremec 6-speed manual transmission, engine and transmission coolers, a MagneRide damping system, adjustable strut mounts, active exhaust, and a Torsen differential with 3.73 gearing, this GT350R is well-equipped. Inside, the Shelby sports Recaro ebony leather seats, exposed carbon fiber IP, rear-seat delete, and the $2,000 Technology Package, which includes blind-spot and cross-traffic alert, a Bang and Olufsen 12-speaker sound system, and a voice-activated touchscreen with navigation.
This 2020 Ford Shelby GT350R presents a rare opportunity to own the pinnacle a formidable and track-ready Mustang in impeccable condition.
