This 2004 Ford Mustang Saleen S281C Cobra combines the final-generation SN95 Mustang platform with Saleen performance engineering and SVT Cobra hardware. Now showing just 1,700 miles, this Competition Orange example is believed to be the only Saleen S281 Cobra coupe produced in said color.
Supercharged V8 Performance and Six-Speed Manual
Power comes from a supercharged 4.6-liter DOHC V8 featuring a cast-iron block, aluminum cylinder heads, a forged rotating assembly, and an oil cooler. Factory-rated output was 390 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque, giving the Cobra a strong foundation for its performance-oriented character.
A Tremec T-56 six-speed manual transmission sends power to the rear wheels through 3.55:1 gearing and a limited-slip differential. Saleen mufflers and a performance exhaust system complete the powertrain package, retaining the traditional combination of a supercharged V8 and manual transmission that appeals to enthusiast drivers.
Saleen Styling and Racecraft Suspension
The Competition Orange exterior is distinguished by Saleen-specific bodywork, including revised front and rear fascias, side skirts, louvered side scoops, and an S281-E rear wing. Chrome-finished 18-inch Saleen five-spoke alloy wheels are fitted with Pirelli P Zero Nero tires.
The suspension incorporates Racecraft components, including revised front sway bar hardware, springs, front struts, and rear shocks. Four-wheel disc brakes provide stopping power, with Cobra-branded calipers at the front.
Inside, the cabin features Dark Charcoal Nudo leather sport seats with Medium Graphite microsuede inserts and embroidered Cobra emblems. Additional equipment includes Saleen-embroidered headrests, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, air conditioning, cruise control, and a Mach 460 audio system with a six-disc CD changer. White instrument dials include a 160-mph speedometer and an SVT-branded tachometer with a 6,500-rpm redline.
Auction Details and Collectibility
Its original window sticker lists a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $49,643, while its current auction listing reflects growing interest in well-preserved, low-mileage performance Mustangs. The Mustang is offered with a Saleen window sticker, manufacturer literature, a Saleen hat, spare parts, and a clean title.
With its reported one-of-one Competition Orange specification and just 1,700 miles, this S281C Cobra offers collectors an unusual combination of SVT Cobra performance, Saleen engineering, and limited-production appeal. Offered without a reserve on Bring a Trailer, it presents an opportunity to acquire a remarkably preserved example of the New Edge Mustang era.
