Can an 800-HP Ford Mustang beat a Stage 1 BMW M4?

In the world of modern performance cars, raw horsepower is only one piece of the puzzle. Vehicle weight, transmission technology, traction, and driver execution all play equally important roles once the lights go green. That’s exactly what Carwow’s Matt Watson set out to explore by lining up a heavily modified supercharged Ford Mustang against a Stage 1 tuned BMW M4 (F82) in a comprehensive series of drag races, rolling races, and braking challenges.

While the Mustang enters the contest with a staggering 800 horsepower, the BMW counters with significantly less weight, a lightning-fast dual-clutch transmission, and renowned German engineering. On paper, it appears to be a straightforward battle of brute force versus precision—but the numbers only tell part of the story.

USA vs Germany: Two Different Performance Philosophies

American muscle has always been defined by large-displacement V8 engines, massive torque, and explosive acceleration. European performance cars, meanwhile, focus on balance, efficiency, and extracting maximum performance through advanced engineering.

This matchup perfectly represents those opposing philosophies. The Ford Mustang delivers supercharged V8 thunder and old-school rear-wheel-drive excitement, while the BMW M4 relies on turbocharged efficiency, sophisticated electronics, and one of BMW’s quickest dual-clutch gearboxes.

Clive Sutton Supercharged Ford Mustang

Representing Team USA is a highly modified Ford Mustang prepared by renowned British performance specialist Clive Sutton. Originally powered by Ford’s naturally aspirated 5.0-liter Coyote V8 producing 453 horsepower and 540 Nm of torque, this Mustang has received a comprehensive performance upgrade consisting of a supercharger and performance exhaust system. The result is an enormous increase to 800 horsepower and 870 Nm of torque.

Unlike many modern performance cars, all of that power is managed through a traditional six-speed manual transmission, sending every horsepower exclusively to the rear wheels. The upgraded Mustang tips the scales at approximately 1,812 kilograms, and with all of its modifications included, carries an estimated value of around £165,000.

Stage 1 BMW M4 (F82)

Lining up alongside the Mustang is an F82-generation BMW M4 owned by performance tuner Mike. Rather than undergoing extensive hardware modifications, the M4 features a relatively conservative Stage 1 ECU calibration paired with a tuned seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Its twin-turbocharged inline-six now develops approximately 550 horsepower and 750 Nm of torque. Although it gives away 250 horsepower compared to the Mustang, the BMW enjoys a significant weight advantage at just 1,537 kilograms. Its dual-clutch transmission also promises near-instantaneous gear changes that minimize interruptions in acceleration.
