FOR SALE: 1967 Shelby Mustang GT500

Formerly owned by Carroll Shelby

When the muscle car wars began reaching new heights in the late 1960s, Ford found itself under increasing pressure after Chevrolet introduced the all-new Chevrolet Camaro. To keep the Mustang at the forefront of American performance, Ford once again turned to legendary automotive designer and racer Carroll Shelby.

The result was the fearsome 1967 Shelby GT500, a machine that elevated the Mustang from pony car status into full-fledged muscle car territory. Built on the slightly larger 1967 Mustang platform, the GT500 introduced Ford’s massive 428 cubic-inch Police Interceptor V8 to the Shelby lineup. Officially rated at 355 horsepower, the big-block engine featured the same aggressive performance camshaft later used in the legendary 428 Cobra Jet engine.

According to its listing on Bring a Trailer, this particular example was completed in February 1967 and originally delivered to City Motors in National City, California. Finished in highly desirable Wimbledon White over a black Décor interior, the car retains one of the most sought-after factory color combinations ever offered on a Shelby Mustang.

From the factory, it came exceptionally well-optioned with a four-speed manual transmission, power steering, front disc brakes, the Interior Décor Group, fold-down rear seat, and the Extra Cooling Package. As one of only 2,048 GT500 fastbacks produced for the 1967 model year, this example stands as a rare and highly collectible piece of Shelby history.

Its story becomes even more fascinating thanks to its remarkable ownership history. The car was reportedly won in a contest by its original owners before later finding its way into the hands of California racer Chuck Jones. Around 1999, the GT500 was purchased by both Carroll Shelby and collector Stephen Becker, adding tremendous provenance to an already significant automobile.

During Shelby’s ownership, the car received several tasteful upgrades, including the installation of a modern air-conditioning system and headers for the 428 Police Interceptor engine, enhancing drivability while preserving its legendary performance character.

Inside, the black knitted Décor interior remains impressively preserved and continues to showcase the signature Shelby touches that defined the GT500 experience. Features include the iconic wood-rimmed three-spoke steering wheel, Shelby roll bar with inertia-reel harnesses, Stewart Warner oil pressure and ammeter gauges mounted beneath the dash, and the 8,000-rpm tachometer that completed the competition-inspired cockpit.

When combined with its documented history, rare factory specifications, and prior ownership by Carroll Shelby himself, this 1967 Shelby GT500 is among the most desirable and historically significant muscle cars ever built.
