In the quest to rejuvenate interest in the aging Fox-body platform of the Mustang, Ford’s Team Mustang stumbled upon the 2001 Bullitt, a retro-styled coupe inspired by the iconic Highland Green 1968 fastback famously driven by Steve McQueen in the movie “Bullitt.” The concept proved wildly successful, prompting Ford to reintroduce the model again for 2008.
The updated 2008 Bullitt, based on the S197 platform, faithfully adhered to the 2001 formula, boasting Highland Green paint, vintage styling cues, such as 18-inch Bullitt wheels, and a deliberate absence of external emblems or spoilers.
Beyond its striking visuals, the $3,310 Bullitt package introduced performance upgrades including Ford Racing’s Power Upgrade Package, boosting output to 315 HP, alongside suspension enhancements, Bullitt-specific brake pads, 3.73:1 gears, and a dual-exhaust system meticulously tuned to echo the distinct roar of the 1968 movie car. These features rendered the Bullitt an instant collectible and a prospect for future classic status.
These Mustangs are rare and as such many enthusiasts are eagerly waiting for an opportunity to own these cars which we don’t always get to see being offered for sale on the second-hand market.
