Ford Built a Mustang Ute and Kept It Hidden for Years

Ford has built a one-off Mustang ute based on the S550-generation Mustang, creating a factory-developed utility version of the sports car that was never intended for production. The project started with a Cyber Yellow Mustang fastback and was carried out inside Ford’s Experimental Vehicle Building (EVB) Metal Shop. Ford personnel transformed the car by removing its conventional rear bodywork and fabricating an open cargo bed behind the passenger compartment.

The project reportedly consumed hundreds of hours of fabrication work and was used as a training exercise for Ford apprentices. The build gave apprentices practical experience with metal fabrication and vehicle construction while producing a fully realized experimental vehicle. The Mustang ute is different from aftermarket Mustang pickup conversions because it was constructed by Ford personnel within the company’s own experimental facilities. It was not commissioned as a customer vehicle, nor was it developed as a production proposal.

Ford has not released a complete technical specification for the ute. The company has not detailed its structural modifications, payload capacity or powertrain configuration, meaning the vehicle should be viewed as an experimental build rather than a production-ready pickup.

Creating the cargo bed also required more than simply cutting away the Mustang’s rear bodywork. The original fastback was designed around an enclosed rear structure and trunk, so converting it to an open-bed configuration required extensive fabrication to integrate the new rear section with the existing vehicle.

The completed Mustang ute remained within Ford’s experimental operations for years before being added to the company’s U.S. Heritage Fleet. Its inclusion preserves the vehicle as an official Ford experimental project rather than allowing it to disappear after its original purpose was completed. Ford’s Heritage Fleet includes significant prototypes, concepts and engineering vehicles that document projects outside the company’s regular production lineup. The Mustang ute now joins that collection as one of the more unusual S550-based vehicles built by Ford.

There is currently no indication that Ford plans to offer a Mustang ute to customers. The company has not announced a production program based on the vehicle, and the project should not be interpreted as a preview of an upcoming Mustang variant.
