Ford Motor Company has issued a safety recall impacting 86,543 Mustang Mach-E electric vehicles across the 2023 through 2025 model years due to a manufacturing defect that could cause the rear side quarter window glass trim to detach while driving.
According to a Part 573 Safety Recall Report (26V487) submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the detached trim pieces pose a potential road hazard to trailing traffic and increase the risk of a crash.
The Root Cause: Process Acceleration Backfires
The issue originates from an assembly line modification at Tier 1 supplier Saint-Gobain México. In February 2023, the supplier introduced a new assembly jig designed to streamline operations and decrease the time required to mount the trim piece onto the quarter glass assembly.
However, the shortened cycle time did not allow sufficient time for the assembly’s trim primer to cure fully before the components were joined. This premature bonding phase left thousands of assemblies with inadequate structural adhesion.
The defect affects both left-hand and right-hand rear quarter window glass components installed on vehicles manufactured between February 17, 2023, and October 08, 2024.
Investigation and Findings
Ford’s Product Development Body Exterior team first identified a sharp spike in warranty claims in early May 2026, prompting the automaker’s Critical Concern Review Group (CCRG) to launch a formal investigation.
During joint reviews in June 2026, NHTSA’s Office of Defect Investigation (ODI) raised concerns that the sharp edges of detached trim pieces presented a direct physical hazard to other road users. As of July 21, 2026, Ford had recorded 219 warranty claims and field reports in the United States and U.S. territories related to loose or detached trim.
Ford confirmed that no accidents or injuries have been reported in connection with the issue. Estimated defect prevalence across the recalled population sits at approximately 1%.
To resolve the root cause, Saint-Gobain México implemented a Permanent Corrective Action (PCA) on September 28, 2024, installing an automated timer on the assembly jig that enforces a mandatory 30-second dwell time before trim installation can proceed.
Symptoms, Remedy, and Owner Timeline
Drivers operating affected vehicles may notice visual signs of unseated or loose quarter window trim, accompanied by cabin wind noise, squeaks, or rattles at highway speeds.
Ford will begin notifying dealers between September 3 and September 7, 2026. Interim owner notification letters are scheduled to be mailed from September 10 through September 14, 2026, advising owners to bring their vehicles to a Ford or Lincoln dealership for inspection and, if necessary, free trim replacement. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) will become searchable on the NHTSA and Ford recall portals on September 7, 2026.
