The legendary Shelby GT500 lineage traces its roots to 1967, when Shelby American unveiled its most powerful Mustang to date. Powered by a 428-cubic-inch big-block V8 equipped with dual Holley four-barrel carburetors, the original GT500 represented a major leap in both performance and road presence. Its debut came during a pivotal period for Shelby, as Ford assumed greater control over engineering and purchasing while relocating much of the production from California to Ionia, Michigan to improve manufacturing quality and address fiberglass body fitment issues.
Despite the organizational changes, 1967 became one of the most remarkable years in Shelby history. The company introduced the GT500, produced a rare GT500 coupe, experimented with a GT500 fitted with a GT40-derived 427-cubic-inch V8 that Carroll Shelby famously piloted to approximately 170 mph, and built the only GT500 convertible ever produced. These extraordinary projects cemented the 1967 model year as one of the most distinctive chapters in Shelby Mustang history.
The GT500 itself elevated the Mustang formula by combining big-block muscle with upgraded suspension tuning and premium comfort features. It successfully bridged the gap between high-performance sports car and grand touring coupe, delivering race-inspired capability without sacrificing everyday drivability. That philosophy continues to define the modern Shelby GT500, even as the GT350 was eventually discontinued so Ford and Shelby could concentrate on expanding the GT500 program.
Now available on Bring a Trailer, this exceptionally preserved 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 represents the pinnacle of the S550 generation. Chassis No. L1003 has covered 2,300 miles since new and is powered by Ford’s hand-built 5.2-liter supercharged Predator V8, producing an impressive 760 horsepower. The engine is paired with a lightning-fast seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, delivering explosive acceleration and track-ready performance.
The performance package extends well beyond raw horsepower. Launch Control and Line Lock optimize standing starts, while a Torsen limited-slip differential with 3.73 gearing ensures maximum traction. Lightweight black-finished alloy wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires further reinforce the GT500’s impressive handling credentials.
Finished in Iconic Silver Metallic with a contrasting black-painted roof and High Gloss Ebony racing stripes, the exterior is complemented by a functional rear spoiler that increases stability at elevated speeds. Inside, Recaro sport seats deliver outstanding support while maintaining comfort for longer journeys.
