A total of 149,678 Mustangs were sold in 1971. Total production was down 36% year on year, the fifth year in a row of declining sales. Total production was down from 190,727 units in 1970. The Mustang was continuing to go against consumer tastes and Ford’s moves to sure up demand just did not work.
Once again, the Hardtop coupe, between the basic and Grande versions was the biggest seller, making up just over a combined 54% of the total cars sold. The convertible was slow selling by 1971 with 6,121 units sold, making up only 4% of total production. The Boss 351 and Mach 1 both sold well, with the Mach 1 making up a strong 24.39% of total.
