5.4L supercharged DOHC V8 engine that produces 500hp
The 2008 Shelby GT500 was one awesome car so when Ford basically carried it over unchanged for the 2009 model year we weren’t super disappointed. Equipped with a 5.4L (330 cid) supercharged intercooled DOHC V8 engine that produces 500hp at 6000 RPM and 480 lb-ft torque at 4500 RPM, the 2009 GT500 is one fast car. Using a dual 60mm electronic throttle body and a supercharger operating at 9 psi of boost Shelby and SVT created a legend that is still popular with gear heads all these years later.
Internally, the engine has a forged steel crankshaft, forged steel I beam connecting rods and tolerances in their bearings measured in microns. Behind the engine is a six speed Tremec TR-6060 manual transmission transferring power to a modified 8.8 limited slip 3.31 ratio rear end. To stop the snake, they have installed 14″ Brembo vented front rotors and 4 piston calipers. On the rear are 11.8 ” vented rotors and dual piston calipers. The whole thing rides on P255.45ZR18 front tires, P285/40ZR18 rear supercar tires and a specially tuned and designed rear suspension.
A tuned stainless steel X pipe exhaust carries the gasses from the engine and only adds to the power and sound.
On the exterior for convertibles (yes, this year you can get a convertible) is a premium cloth top. The Shelby convertible does come with added structural support to help keep the car from flexing. The hood on all Shelbys is a power dome hood with twin heat extractors to remove excess hot air from around the engine and help keep it cool. The coupe comes with twin Le Mans racing stripes just like on the original earlier Shelbys. To help with front visibility and looks, there are fog lams mounted in the lower front fascia. Adding to the Shelby experience are Shelby “GT 500” accent stripes on the lower rocker molding.
Colors for the Shelby are Torch red, Alloy metallic, Vista blue metallic, Performance white, Vapor silver metallic Grabber orange and Black. There are paint trim and stripe combos available with the Shelby as well. Trim colors are dependent on the base car color.
Interior colors are limited to Charcoal black and Crimson red. Interior comes with a Shaker 500 sound system, a 6 gauge cluster with My-color, that includes a boost gauge. Charcoal black front leather seats wit a Cobra logo. The seats get either charcoal black or crimson inserts and a unique leather trimmed steering wheel with red stitching.
The main changes for the 2009 Shelby GT500 were the addition of satellite radio which became standard. Color/stripe combinations were also unchanged, but if you wanted the “Red Stripe Package” you could once again select a black or white coupe as well as a convertible.
