Background & Details

The 2000 Mustang was as expected, little changed from the major revamp in styling from the previous year. With the exception to colors and a few trim  changes, there were few changes. There was a deck lid release installed that had a glow in the dark handle. They also rear child safety brackets were added to all models. Outside, all Mustangs received new headlight assemblies that had dark smoked reflective lenses replacing the all chrome units.

Changes in exterior styling for the base model of the 2000 Ford Mustang were nonexistent. The 35th anniversary badges were of course, missing. The only new addition to the standard package was the addition of rounded exhaust cut outs for the dual exhaust GT cars. Ford continued the modern retro look for the Mustang’s interior, unchanged from the previous year.

The base 3.8 liter V6 engine remained at a respectable 190 horsepower. It had decent low end torque and pulled hard enough for a “base model” power plant. For the 2000 Mustang GT, it’s iron block 4.6 liter engine cranked out a very healthy 260 horsepower, which remained the same as the 1999 update which came with a 35 horsepower gain from the previous year’s model. The Cobra R got a 5.4 liter engine produced a strong 385 horsepower and 385 pounds of torque.

Special Edition Models & Variants

The Cobra was absent from the line up because of the problems with the 1999 models, but Ford kept up the excitement by bringing us the limited production SVT Cobra R. At over $55,000 it was more than twice as expensive as a standard GT. This street legal Mustang featured a 385 hp, 5.4L DOHC V-8 engine. It was also the first Mustang to ever feature a six-speed manual transmission.

2000 Ford Mustang GT

GT

Mustang GT’s gained the hood, side scoops and pedestal rear spoiler from the 1999 35th anniversary edition giving the car a much more aggressive appearance. Also new was the addition of a new 17-inch alloy wheel with styling that mimicked the beloved five spoke Torq-Thrust wheels from the 1960’s. These new wheels quickly became a “must have” item for many owners of New Edge Mustang’s and proved to be a popular option. For the 2000 Mustang GT, it’s iron block 4.6 liter engine cranked out a very healthy 260 horsepower, which remained the same as the 1999 update which came with a 35 horsepower gain from the previous year’s model.
